How the heck are ya? How is your summer holiday going? If you are like me, you’ve been juggling work and having the littles home, but it is picturesque, right? Cue tweeting birds and breakfast-in-bed made by your sweet little angels, smiling from ear to ear as they get along swimingly. What’s that you say? No? Not even a little bit? The only breakfast in bed YOU are having is the one you are picking out of your bed because someone snuck in and spilled…
So how do you survive summer with the least amount of stress and the most amount of fun and calm? In my house, we diffuse a LOT! We breathe a LOT!
So what do I diffuse? I use food grade oils – the purest you can find on the market so that I know the stuff I am putting out there for my little to inhale is the best she can. (If you want to know more about what company I trust, just shoot me a message via my website!)
Wake Up Sunshine! This is my blend of Peppermint and Wild Orange. LOVE starting the day out with this one. It helps us to feel uplifted and away, sweeping the cobwebs away as soon as we smell it.
Tangy Tangerine! By mid day, we are all dragging a bit so I’ll pop some Tangerine oil in my hands, rub them together and make Q take a big oil whiff! She does this a few times and loves it-thinks it is hilarious.
Sleepy Snuggles I may look forward to this particular blend a bit too much on an evning. Can you blame me?! We’ve had an amazing fun filled day! This is for those littles who DON’T like lavender.
For those who do…
Dream Spell This one will do wonders…
One of the things that we love doing together is chaning out our diffuser blends-she helps to pour the water and oils, counting the drops as they go in. It is a great way for us to connect and do something together, something we can slow down and just enjoy. Do your little ones help you fill the diffuser?
On to the breathing! It is pretty imperative to our everyday living, wouldn’t you say?! But it is even more imperative in keeping everyone happy in this house. My daughter Q and I are very similar souls and that doesn’t always manifest in our best light, if ya know what I mean. Some of the breathing techniques we use are below:
Bumble Bee Breaths
Known as Bhramari in Pranayama practice. Pranayama being the control of the breath in Yoga. Sitting comfortably with your legs crossed, breath in through your nose, then with fingers in your ears hum out your exhalation. The lovely comforting resonance of this has a calming effect and done with eyes closed can make it even more peaceful.
We lie on our backs and place our hands on our Belly. As we take a big breath in, our belly’s fill up and rise, like a balloon! As we let our breath out, our belly’s deflate, like a balloon. When tensions rise, we can start to shallow breath, almost panting in a sense. This brings us back to our core, deepening the breath and relaxing. Can also be done standing!
Sitting cross legged or lying on the floor, we start with normal breathing. Then we start the counting. We inhale for a count of 1-2-3, hold that breath for 1-2-3, and exhale for 1-2-3-4-5. It helps us to calm our breathing and to bring our awareness back to present. You can do this in any combination of time, just make sure your exhale is longer than your inhale and hold!
